Chapter 4

Joquin woke to the feeling of feather-light kisses being planted along the curve of his bare shoulder. A crisp breeze whistled through the narrow window in the corner of Lord Sendrin’s chamber, making the damp impressions of Sendrin’s lips tingle. Soon the seasons would change, it would be time to shutter up the crevice at night to help keep the cold out. But for now, Sendrin himself provided all the warmth Joquin needed.

It didn’t take long for his kisses became more ardent, prompting Joquin to giggle with contentment and unfurl his limbs as arousal stirred in his body and quickened his blood. Meanwhile, Sendrin’s big hand brushed over Joquin’s chest and trailed its way downward until it rested between his legs. The stroking Sendrin commenced in that sensitive region soon had him squirming with excitement and pleasure. Meanwhile, Sendrin’s mouth took command of Joquin’s neck, the swipe of his lips alternating with the tickle of his tongue and even the playful nips of his teeth.

“I fear we shall be late to the morning meal again,” Joquin chided Sendrin. He had long since stopped appending the words “my lord” to every statement or question. For reasons he still couldn’t quite fathom, Sendrin had ordered him to dispense with that formality. For the past two full moons, ever since the traveling merchants had left with the other captives, he and Sendrin had lived together as near-equals. Though Joquin maintained a proper air of deference in the Great Hall and in the bailey, posing there as Baron Sendrin’s hired entertainer and nothing more, once they retired to Sendrin’s chamber for the evening and slipped into the big bed they now shared, they were as one with no barriers—social or sartorial—between them.

“You worry about offending the cook?” Sendrin laughed and paused in his attentions to swat at Joquin’s bare rear end. “What does it matter what the servants think? They are here to attend me, not the other way around. I shall stay abed as long as I please…which is as long as you are here with me.”

Joquin shared Sendrin’s amusement. “Do not complain if the porridge has gone cold and lumpy, then.”

“I will have to satisfy my hunger in other ways if it does. Fear not, my appetite is strong.”

As close as they had become, Joquin had still not told Sendrin the truth about his origins. He never bothered to correct Sendrin when he referred to Joquin’s efforts to earn his living as a minstrel, letting the assumption stand though Sendrin had never disparaged his supposedly humble origins. After all, what difference did it make? They were happy together and Sendrin obviously saw nothing untoward about sharing his bed with Joquin. In so many ways, the past had ceased to exist. He seldom thought about Garwyn, Leonil, or the potential knighthood he had left behind. Perhaps if he stopped reflecting on it altogether, it actually would cease to exist in the manner of a dream one might push out of mind. That
